BACKGROUND
We had received an enquiry from a ‘Design to build' Engineering and Construction Solutions Major for movement of approximately 9200 MT of Pipes from Anjar in Gujarat to their site at Kattupalli in Tamilnadu. Traversing a 2100+ KM path from West Coast of India to the East Coast through Road did not seem ideal especially when the Point of Origin & Point of Destination both being Coastal Towns.
Even though being the first time, keeping both Safety and Cost Economics into consideration MLL suggested movement by coastal route. After rounds of discussion with key stakeholders, a decision to move the material through Sea was approved and awarded us the Middle Leg of the movement from Mundra Port to Kattupalli Port.
CHALLENGES
Moving 9200 MT of Steel Coated Pipes through Vessel, was not easy especially when it’s the first instance. This was a totally new experience for the whole team and had to understand and learn many things related to coastal movement like:-
- Different costing components of end to end logistics
- Documentation
- Custom and Port related Requirements
- Resource requirement and optimization
The vessel movement involved a very high degree of co-ordination with all other stakeholders since the contract was awarded to three different parties i.e. First Leg, Middle Leg & Last Leg.
- Co-ordination been done on a continuous basis with the customer and the service provider involved for movement from Anjar to Mundra Port to ensure that the entire stock is available prior to the berthing of the Vessel at the Mundra Port.
- Liaison with Vessel agent, Stevedores, and the Surveyor-( appointed by Customer ) for making arrangements for loading of materials into the vessel in a timely manner.
- This entire operation has been done on time without being any demurrage / wharfhage been incurred at the port.
