0 Inventory Shrinkage in Grocery Fulfilment: Igniting Success for India’s Major E- commerce Player

The e-commerce market in India has experienced exponential growth over the past decade, driven by rapid digitalization and increased internet penetration. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated this growth, as lockdowns and social distancing measures led to a significant shift towards online shopping. This growth is not limited to metropolitan areas; tier 2 and tier 3 cities have emerged as key markets, showcasing significant consumer demand and contributing to the sector’s expansion.

Within this growth landscape, major e-commerce players, supermarkets, and hyperlocal delivery segments have emerged as significant players. Traditional supermarket chains have expanded their presence online, offering a wide range of products. Hyperlocal delivery platforms connect local stores with customers, providing quick deliveries of various essentials. The industry is poised for further growth with investments in logistics, technological innovations, and expansion into untapped markets.

Our customer, India’s leading e-commerce platform offering products across various categories from electronics and fashion to groceries and furniture, was focused on optimizing grocery deliveries by improving inventory accuracy and reducing shrinkage, optimizing the pick-pack-dispatch process, managing same-day and next-day delivery, and ensuring minimal or zero damages during handling.

Transforming E-commerce Suply Chain with our Sustainable and Technology enabled Fulfilment Solutions

Managing the fulfilment operations for our customer in the Eastern India region, we handle an average of 32,000 orders daily, with the capacity to handle up to 39,500 orders per day.

Grocery Solutions: The implementation of stock-take at various levels has been a pivotal step in our operational strategy, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in inventory management. Additionally, the introduction of multiple shifts and cut-offs has enabled us to accommodate multiple dispatch by date (DBD) requirements, enhancing our ability to meet varying delivery schedules and customer demands.

Operational Excellence: The integration of lean methodology applications has been instrumental in mitigating damages and enhancing the efficiency of our picking process for improved productivity and performance. We introduced stainless steel picking trolleys with larger wheels to facilitate easier movement and increase the number of items picked per pick (IPP) with reduced effort. Additionally, our initiatives in inventory space optimization have enabled us to accommodate more load and utilize storage capacity more effectively, thus contributing to enhanced operational efficiency. These strategic measures underscore our commitment to innovation and continuous improvement in our logistics operations.

Technology & Automation: The addition of E-HOPT (Hand Operated Pallet Truck) has significantly expedited the transit process and minimized travel time within our logistics operations. By incorporating this technology, we have streamlined the movement of pallets and enhanced overall efficiency. Additionally, the utilization of roller conveyors during loading further optimizes our workflow, ensuring smooth and efficient handling of goods.

Sustainability Initiatives: Our E-gate pass system has been instrumental in reducing paper usage within our operations, aligning with our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. We have introduced Eco-boards to replace stainless steel panels on our heavy-duty racks, reducing resource consumption and enhancing efficiency in our storage facilities. Additionally, our utilization of sewage water treatment plants and the discharge water from air conditioners for plantation purposes exemplifies our dedication to eco-friendly practices and conservation efforts. These initiatives collectively reflect our ongoing commitment to minimizing environmental impact while optimizing our operational processes.
