Green Logistics: a shift towards sustainable supply chain ecosystem
In a world facing the pressing need to combat climate change and curb greenhouse gas emissions, businesses acknowledge their vital role in shaping sustainability. The challenges are substantial, with global CO2 emissions at 34 billion tons yearly. Immediate action is crucial to mitigate climate risks. Countries are adopting net-zero goals, targeting a 1.5°C temperature limit and major emissions reduction by 2050. India is also making strides, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2070, with ambitious targets like 500 GW of non-fossil fuel by 2030, 50% renewable energy by 2030, and significant emission cuts.
Mahindra Logistics is dedicated to becoming carbon neutral by 2040, in line with national objectives, while driving India’s sustainable progress. Our sustainability focus includes network optimization, renewable energy, and electric vehicles. Leading by example, MLL aims to achieve net-zero electricity consumption by 2026, employ 100% recycled pallets/packaging by 2028, and introduce electric vehicles/LNG/Hydrogen Fuels to 70% of the LH fleet by 2030.
Our state-of-the-art, energy-efficient warehouses exemplify green logistics. Spanning over 19 million sq. ft. across India and 4 million sq. ft. of solar-powered, multi-client warehouses in 500+ locations, we prioritize bespoke infrastructure. Certified under LEED/IGBC standards, five facilities have saved over 200 metric tons of CO2 emissions.
Mahindra Logistics operates an EV ecosystem with 1,300 EVs and 70 charging stations in 19 cities, supported by integrated technology like EDel for last-mile delivery. This significantly reduces emissions, contributing to a cleaner transportation network. The EV cargo & PV fleet has covered 25 million green kilometres, delivering over 8 million packages.
To achieve our mission, we have implemented a comprehensive set of initiatives encompassing decarbonization, green infrastructure, and circularity within our operations.
Decarbonization is pivotal in our strategy, prompting a shift to alternative fuels and energy efficiency. Initiatives for carbon neutrality and reduced impact include optimizing transportation routes and adopting energy-efficient practices. Proactively engaging in reforestation aids ecosystem restoration. We’re rapidly adopting electric vehicles for last-mile electrification, reducing reliance on traditional fuels. Our pilot programs explore LNG and Hydrogen Fuels, aligning with net-zero goals.
Aligned with our goal of becoming a Planet Positive entity, Green Infrastructure is a pivotal pillar of Mahindra Logistics’ sustainability strategy. We’re rapidly advancing towards a greener operational infrastructure, embracing energy efficiency, renewable integration, and environmentally conscious technologies. Our initiatives include large-scale solar projects powering facilities, significantly reducing our carbon footprint. Multiple EV charging stations promote electric fleet usage, advancing cleaner transportation. Through Green Infrastructure, we aim to reduce impact, set an industry example, and inspire positive change for a sustainable future.
Central to our sustainable supply chain ecosystem is Circularity. Sourcing and repurposing recycled materials, adopting reusable packaging, and water conservation through practices like rainwater harvesting exemplify our commitment. Utilizing 11.5K eco-pallets from recycled wood, achieving a 22% water consumption reduction, and implementing over 500 “Green Hours” showcase our holistic approach, embedding environmental responsibility across operations.
Furthermore, keeping with our pledge and strategy, we have initiated several impactful measures and joined the Science Based Targets Initiatives (SBTI) to establish clear metrics and goals. We have also planted more than 14,000 trees, resulting in savings of over 1,500 metric tons of CO2 emissions from electricity consumption.
The shift towards a more environmentally conscious supply chain ecosystem is not merely an aspiration but an urgent necessity. At Mahindra Logistics, we are proud to be at the forefront, leading the industry. However, we acknowledge that our journey is far from over. We are constantly exploring innovative technologies, collaborating with partners, and engaging our employees to drive further improvements in our sustainability performance. As we continue towards becoming the most sustainable and responsible logistics company globally, we invite industry stakeholders, customers, and partners to join us in this endeavour. Together, we can create a supply chain ecosystem that not only drives economic growth but also safeguards our planet for future generations.
At Mahindra Logistics, we believe that the time for green logistics is now. And, we embrace sustainability to make a better today for a brighter tomorrow.
